CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RI.5.2

CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.5.2
Write informative/explanatory texts to examine a topic and convey ideas and information clearly.

This week we are focusing on informational text. In addition we are hitting the ground running with spelling words. Finally we are listening to 'Wonder' as our read aloud.

Spelling test will be on friday. Please know the focus will be more on the vocabulary aspect but students will be expected to spell the words too. Notice a theme here? 'Graph'- which is a greek root which means to begin. The purpose is if we can focus on those roots, kids can decode any challenging words meaning! We are also coming back around to those science words that the kids have been exposed to since 1st grade.

Spelling words:
Autograph-
The signature of a famous person
Graffiti-

Pictures or words painted or drawn on a wall, building, etc
Graphite-

A shiny, black substance that is used in pencils.
Paragraph-

A part of a piece of writing that deals with one subject, begins on a new line, and is made up of one or more sentences
Telegraph-
An outdated system of sending messages over long distances by using wires and electrical signals.
Inference-

A conclusion reached on the basis of evidence and reasoning
Investigation-

When scientists and researchers look into something systematically to answer questions about the world around us

Receiving knowledge of the outside world through our senses, or recording information using scientific tools and instruments.
Balance-

An even distribution of weight enabling someone or something to remain upright and steady.
Model -

A three-dimensional representation of a person or thing, or of a proposed structure, typically on a smaller scale than the original

iReady

iReady is not ready yet. :( We are waiting for the diagnostic testing window to open. In the meantime please discuss with your children the importance of taking a diagnostic assessment seriously. It helps me plan to teach them what they need to know and doesn't waste time teaching them what they don't need to know.

Novel Study

We are beginning 'I Survived the Attacks of 9/11'. While this sounds like a graphic title and text I promise you it's not. It's less than 100 pages and written for elementary students. It's historical fiction, it follows a young boy as he witnesses the attacks and aftermath. It's a really engaging book and the kids will get a lot of true kid friendly perspective on modern history.
